Meet our new Head of Rowing, Mr Peter Campbell
1 October 2019
Genazzano is delighted to welcome our new Head of Rowing Mr Peter Campbell to the College.
Peter started his rowing career in 2001 at the University of Reading as a coxswain. He has always coxed competitively, achieving success at multiple major UK regattas, National Championships and Henley Royal Regatta until he retired from coxing in 2012. During this time, he graduated from the University of Reading and, in 2006, having completed his PGCE at the University of Oxford, he pursued his teaching career at a variety of public and private schools.
Peter then moved to New Zealand in September 2012 to take a break from teaching, and found work in Christchurch as the Assistant Head Coach for Avon Rowing Club and Head Coach of Villa Maria College. Working alongside the Head Coach, Peter led Avon to success as the Champion Club of New Zealand, winning 10 Golds and 9 minor medals at the 2013 National Rowing Championships.
In 2013, Peter moved to Melbourne to assume the role of Head Coach at Powerhouse Rowing Club. During the two-year tenure, he also coached at Firbank Grammar for one season, and for St Catherine’s School the next. His reputation as a coach and teacher led to the opportunity to work at Gippsland Grammar as Director of Rowing. Three successful seasons followed, including multiple State and National achievements. In need of a new challenge, and keen to return to Melbourne so he and his wife could start a family, he took up the mantle of Director of Rowing at Korowa Anglican Girls’ School.
When the opportunity arose to coach at Genazzano, he didn’t need much convincing to make the move from Glen Iris to Kew! Peter has a strong philosophy that is committed to developing an environment that allows our girls to reach their full potential both in the classroom and on the rowing course.
Peter believes that “Genazzano has a reputation as a great school and a pedigree of rowing success. Leading the program is a dream and I feel genuinely blessed to work alongside the young women of Genazzano to develop a rowing program that we can all be immensely proud of. After only a month, I already know that this is where I am meant to be. The students, staff and parents have made me feel very welcome and I can feel the excitement and momentum building with the girls in training. It promises to be a very exciting season”.
Peter is always happy to discuss any and all questions you may have and encourages parents to reach out at any time.
