Genazzano student has a message for students with a disability

When Genazzano FCJ College student Lilly Cascun was only 12 weeks old, doctors diagnosed her with Leber’s congenital amaurosis – a rare, inherited condition resulting in complete blindness.

At 7am this morning, Lilly received an ATAR of 98.6.

Supported by Vision Australia, Lilly completed her General Achievement Test using Braille. A spokeswoman said she was the first to do so in Victoria, as well as being the first to study maths methods and music.

Despite her disability, Lilly continues to defy the odds and wants to flip the script on blindness and low vision.

“The message I want to spread to other young people facing a disability diagnosis is that they can go after their dreams, just differently,” Lilly said.

Lilly starred in a professional production of The Grinning Man this year and hopes to continue a career in the arts.

“Don’t let anyone pigeonhole you and convince you that you can’t live a meaningful life and achieve your goals. I’m living proof that you can,” she said.
